The history of Father’s Day dates back to 1908 when Sonora Smart Dodd celebrated it to honor her father who was a Civil War veteran and raised six children alone after his wife died in childbirth. Dodd was inspired by the American Mother’s Day holiday and wanted to create a similar holiday for fathers. In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a declaration making Father’s Day a federal holiday in the United States.

In India, Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June as well. In Spain, Italy, and Croatia, Father’s Day is celebrated on March 19th to correspond with St. Joseph’s Day, which is the legal Father of Jesus Christ.
