Moscow: A powerful explosion took place on Sunday near Azerbaijan’s huge gas and oil rig located off the coast in the Caspian Sea, and flames were seen rising from there. However, the state-owned oil company said that there was no damage to its reserves.
The cause of the blast was not yet known, but state-run oil company SOCAR said preliminary investigations suggested it was a mud volcano that exploded. In the Caspian Sea, there are many such mollusks from which mud and flammable gas come out.
Azerbaijan’s APA news agency quoted SOCAR spokesman Ibrahim Ahmedov as saying that the explosion occurred about ten kilometers from the Umaid gas field. This gas reservoir is located about 75 km from the coast.
