Chhattisgarh was declared as the cleanest state in the country in the annual cleanliness survey-2021 announced by the central government. On the other hand, Indore in Madhya Pradesh was declared the cleanest city in India for the fifth time in a row, while Surat has got second place in this list.

President Ram Nath Kovind presented the awards to the winners on Saturday. He said that he has been told that 35 states and union territories and urban areas have become open defecation-free.

He suggested that machine cleaning facilities should be made available in all cities. The President also talked about adopting good practices and practices of cleanliness award-winning cities.

According to the ministry, this time 4320 cities and towns have been included in the Swachh Survekshan, which is the largest cleanliness survey in the world. At the start of this move in 2016, only 73 major cities were included in the survey.

Regarding ‘Swachh Survekshan 2021’, the ministry said that there has been a significant improvement in the performance of states and cities at the ground level. For example, six states and six union territories have improved their performance at the grassroots level by five to 25 percent, it said.
