Hong Kong: Police in Hong Kong arrested seven people on Sunday in connection with clashes between pro-democracy and pro-Beijing lawmakers earlier this year following a stalemate in the local legislature. According to political parties and media reports, those arrested include former and current opposition MPs.
A woman and six men have been detained on suspicion of defaming members of the legislature, according to a statement issued by the police. The statement did not provide any information about the detainees. The arrests were made in connection with an inquiry into a committee meeting on May 8 where the pro-democracy chairman’s seat was raised and he was pushed back by security forces, the statement said. The guards arrested several pro-democracy activists, including Iddi Chu and Ray Chan. Chan tweeted that he was arrested at 7 a.m. Sunday.
