New York: The top-seeded pair in the women’s doubles has been eliminated from the US Open tennis tournament as public health officials have issued a segregation notice to France’s Kristina Mladenovic, one of the pair’s players. Christina is among seven players who were being extra cautious during the tournament as they were at risk of a Covid-19 infection after coming into contact with Benoit Pierre. Pierre is the only player to participate in the tournament, which has been found positive.
The American Tennis Association (USTA) announced on Saturday that they were removing Christina and her partner Timia Babos of Hungary from the tournament. The USTA stated that they are following government guidelines. Christina was approved to present the competition until Saturday. She lost in the second round of singles despite leading 6–1, 5–1 while reaching the second round of doubles. Christina and Timia were scheduled to play in the second round against the pair of Gabriel Dabrowski of Canada and Alison Riske of the US who received a walkover.
