Beijing: New technologies are being developed to make life easier for people all over the world. One of these is Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is being discussed a lot these days. People are generating new and best pictures through it, getting big articles and poems written through it, and making presentations for the office or resumes for new jobs. Although there are many advantages of this modern technology, some of its disadvantages are also coming to the fore. Especially fraudsters have also started using it to cheat people. One such case has come to the fore in North China, where a swindler duped a person of Rs 5 crore by pretending to be his friend through deepfakes.
Deepfakes are such fake pictures and videos, in which it is very difficult to identify that the person seen in it is not real, but his image has been created by the computer.
Friend’s face made by face-swapping
According to a report by the international news agency Reuters, a scammer in northern China impersonated a close friend of the victim using AI-based high-tech face-swapping technology and then transferred the money to his bank account. Convinced me to transfer the money.
According to the report, the police of Baotou City told that the fraudster had assumed the face of the victim’s friend on the video call and asked him to transfer 4.3 million yuan (about Rs 5 crore). The victim also transferred the money to his account believing that it was his friend in front of him on the video call.
The police also told that the victim realized this only when his friend (in whose guise the fraudster had assumed) expressed ignorance of the whole. He then approached the police who, acting promptly, have recovered most of the stolen money and are working to trace the remaining amount.
