New Delhi: Captain Shiva Chauhan of the Indian Army’s Fire and Fury Corps Sappers has become the first woman officer to be posted at Siachen, the world’s highest battlefield. He has been posted in Kumar Post. Shiva’s posting has been done after rigorous training.
Captain Shiva Chauhan was subjected to rigorous training at the Siachen Battle School which included endurance training, snow wall climbing, avalanche, and avalanche rescue and survival drills.
The Indian Army said that Captain Shiv Chauhan joined the Siachen Glacier after an arduous climb on January 2 this year. The team of sappers led by Capt Shiv Chauhan will be responsible for a number of engineering works and will be deployed at the post for a period of three months.
It is noteworthy that due to its uninhabited condition, Kumar Post is one of the most dangerous stations for the Indian Army. Located on the Siachen Glacier, the area has seen sporadic fighting between India and Pakistan since 1984 and is considered the highest battlefield on earth.
Between 1984 and 2015, more than 800 soldiers died due to bad weather. Many soldiers have died due to avalanches and accidents. More than 3000 Indian soldiers are continuously stationed there to fulfill the strategic approach with China.
