Board exam twice a year

New Delhi: There is going to be a big change in school education in the country. An expert panel has been appointed by the Central Government to prepare the new National Curriculum Framework (National Curriculum Framework for Foundation Stage-NCFFS). The expert panel is likely to recommend board exams twice a year and a semester system for class 12. Along with this, school boards are also likely to recommend freedom to pursue a mix of science and humanities in classes 11 and 12 to reduce the rigid boundaries that separate arts, commerce, and science.

According to a report in Indian Express, there will be a major change in the structure of classes 9 and 10 after the recommendations being prepared by the 12-member steering committee headed by former ISRO chairman K Kasturirangan are adopted. In this, a rule can be made for the students to pass eight papers. At present, students of most boards including CBSE have to pass at least five subjects in class 10th. For Class 10 students, the committee may suggest an annual system.

The report states that by conducting board exams twice a year for class 12, students will be able to appear for the courses they have completed and feel prepared for. According to a person familiar with the ongoing discussions, the system will gradually move towards facilitating ‘on demand’ examinations as per the initiative suggested in the new National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Sources said the draft of the NCFFS document is almost ready and will be uploaded soon for public feedback. The NCFFS was last revised in 2005 under the Congress-led UPA government. On the basis of the new NCFFS, changes will also be made to the books issued by NCERT and taught in CBSE-affiliated schools. It will also restructure various other aspects of the classroom including choice of subjects, the pattern of teaching, and evaluation based on the NEP 2020 framework.
