New Delhi: In a dramatic political shift, the results of the 2024 Haryana Assembly elections have been announced, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) securing an unprecedented third consecutive term in power. The election, held on 5 October for all 90 assembly seats, marked a significant moment in Haryana’s political history, with voters delivering a mandate never seen before in the state’s electoral landscape.
Initially, the Election Commission had scheduled the voting for 1 October with results expected on 5 October, but logistical adjustments saw the vote rescheduled to 5 October and the results declared on 8 October. Despite these changes, the election witnessed strong voter participation, with a clear message continuity of governance under the BJP.
The BJP’s victory has shattered a long-standing political trend in Haryana, where no party had ever been given three consecutive terms. In past decades, the political power in Haryana had frequently alternated, with parties managing only two back-to-back wins. Congress achieved this twice first in 1968 and 1972, and again in 2005 and 2009. However, this election marks the first time that voters have entrusted a single party with leadership for a third term, marking a watershed moment for the state’s democratic evolution.
The victory is seen as an affirmation of the BJP’s governance under Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who is widely expected to continue his role. With this historic win, the BJP is set to steer Haryana through its next five years, promising continuity in development and economic growth in a state known for its agrarian economy and rapid industrialization. The political dynamics of Haryana, long known for its electoral volatility, have now entered a new era of stability under BJP rule.
