Civil defense officials said floods in Pernambuco have forced more than 1,000 people to leave their homes. The executive secretary of the Civil Protection Agency in Pernambuco, Lieutenant Colonel Leonardo Rodrigues, shared a video on Instagram saying that about 32,000 families live in areas prone to landslides or floods in the state.
Schools have been opened to shelter people in the city of Recife. The state government said 33 municipalities have declared a state of emergency due to the effects of heavy rains in Alagos over the past several days. President Jair Bolsonaro tweeted that a team from the Ministry of Regional Development and the Armed Forces would be sent for “relief and humanitarian assistance”.
