Buenos Aires: Despite Pope Francis’ objections, Argentina has become the largest country in Latin America to legalize abortion. It is being described as the victory of feminist movements in the country. After a session that lasted for about 12 hours, the country’s Senate passed the bill with 38 votes to 29. Although attempts were made to legalize abortion two years ago, the vote in the House was low.
The bill will be signed by President Alberto Fernandez in the coming days. It allows abortion up to 14 weeks, while abortion can be done after 14 weeks in case of rape and endangering the health of the woman. “Safe, legal abortion is now the law,” Fernandez tweeted after the vote. He said it was an election promise. “Today we are a better society that expands women’s rights and ensures public health,” Fernandez said.
It is also legal in parts of Latin America, such as Uruguay, Cuba and Mexico City. However, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro tweeted, “I am very sad for the lives of the children of Argentina. Now they can die in the womb only with the permission of the country. If it was in the hands of me and my administration, we would never approve of abortion. ” Before the House began its session on Tuesday, Pope Francis had protested against legalizing abortion.
