New Delhi: In a significant move to enhance transparency and curb misuse, Indian Railways has announced that starting July 1, 2025, only users with Aadhaar authentication will be able to book Tatkal train tickets. The Railway Ministry issued a directive on June 10, 2025, instructing all railway zones to implement this new rule across the country.
How the New Tatkal Booking Rules Work
- From July 1, 2025:
Only Aadhaar-verified users can book Tatkal tickets through the IRCTC website or mobile app. Passengers must ensure their IRCTC account is linked and authenticated with their Aadhaar number before attempting to book a Tatkal ticket. - From July 15, 2025:
An additional layer of security will be introduced. Passengers booking Tatkal tickets will have to complete an Aadhaar-based OTP (One-Time Password) authentication step during the booking process.
Why This Change?
The Railway Ministry stated that these measures are designed “to ensure that the benefits of the Tatkal Scheme are received by the common end users.” The move is expected to:
- Prevent bulk booking and misuse by touts or agents.
- Make the ticketing process more transparent and secure.
- Ensure that genuine passengers get fair access to Tatkal quota tickets.
