Cairo: At least five people have been killed in a building collapse in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, Egypt. Rescue workers are searching for people in the rubble of a collapsed three-story building in Moharram Beck, an official said. An official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said two girls were among those killed. Police have cordoned off the area and are keeping relatives of people living in the building away from the spot.
Employees are removing debris by bulldozer. Alexandria Governor Mohammed al-Sharif said in a video that nine people from two families were present in the building at the time of the incident, according to preliminary reports. The cause of the collapse is not yet known. Al-Sharif said it was an old building built in 1940. The government had recently launched a campaign to find old buildings in the country, in which those violating the rules were sent to jail, as well as several old buildings were demolished.
