
New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked the vice-chancellors of all universities to frame appropriate rules and norms for granting maternity leave and attendance relief to women students pursuing their graduation (UG) and post-graduation (PG).
The UGC, in a letter to the vice-chancellors, said that there is a provision in the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of MPhil and Ph.D. Degrees) Regulations, 2016, which states that “a female candidate shall be given one degree for the entire period of MPhil and Ph.D.”. Bar maternity leave or child care leave can be granted for 240 days.”

It said, “All Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are requested to frame appropriate rules and norms regarding grant of maternity leave to female students in their institutions and affiliated colleges and extend the date of attendance, submission of examination forms or Provide all relief and exemptions as deemed necessary for female students pursuing UG and PG programs.
