SWAYAM Exams

New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has taken a significant step toward enhancing online learning by introducing a groundbreaking framework. Under this new system, universities can now conduct exams for courses offered through the Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM) platform. Let’s delve into the details:

Boosting Participation and Flexibility

The updated SWAYAM exam framework aims to boost student participation while providing robust support for tech-based learning. Here’s how it works:

  1. University-Based Exams: Students who complete SWAYAM courses can now choose to take their exams at their universities. This shift from centralized proctored exams (previously conducted by the National Testing Agency and the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) allows greater flexibility and convenience.
  2. Seamless Integration: By registering through their universities, students can seamlessly combine online learning with their regular academic programs. The framework ensures that SWAYAM exams become an integral part of their educational journey.
  3. Re-Examination Opportunities: For those who faced challenges during the initial SWAYAM tests, the framework introduces re-examination procedures. Students who failed or missed the first attempt can retake exams in subsequent semesters, ensuring a fair chance at success.
  4. Transcripts and Credits: The credits earned through SWAYAM courses will now be reflected in students’ transcripts. This recognition enhances the value of online learning and encourages more students to explore SWAYAM offerings.

Implementation and University Roles

To ensure a seamless transition, the UGC recommends the following steps:

  1. Nodal Officers: Each university must designate a Nodal Officer responsible for overseeing SWAYAM course registration, test administration, and credit transfer procedures. This appointment guarantees efficient implementation and maximizes the framework’s benefits.
  2. Awareness and Adoption: The UGC’s decision follows a year-long series of awareness-raising events and consultations with Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The goal is to encourage HEIs to adopt SWAYAM courses and leverage the framework for better learner-friendliness.
SWAYAM Exams

In summary, the UGC’s new framework empowers students, simplifies exam processes, and strengthens the bridge between online and traditional learning. As UGC Chairperson M Jagadesh Kumar aptly puts it, “Let’s embrace SWAYAM courses and create a more learner-friendly educational landscape.”
