New Delhi: Triumph India has expanded its portfolio with the launch of the Scrambler 400X, a retro-styled adventure bike that is based on the same platform as the Speed 400 roadster. The Scrambler 400X is the second bike to be manufactured in India under the partnership between Triumph and Bajaj Auto, which aims to develop and produce affordable and accessible motorcycles for the Indian and global markets. The Scrambler 400X can be booked online or through Triumph’s dealerships by paying a refundable amount of Rs 10,000. The company has also launched more than 25 accessories along with the bike, including luggage options, engine guards, handlebar risers and LED indicators. The company plans to expand its reach to more than 100 cities by the end of this year.
Engine and Specifications
The Scrambler 400X shares the same engine as the Speed 400, which is a TR series engine that has been specially designed for the Indian market. It is a liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine with a displacement of 398.15cc that produces 40PS (39.5hp) of power at 8,000rpm and 37.5Nm (27.7lb-ft) of torque at 6,500rpm. The engine is mated to a six-speed gearbox with a slip-and-assist clutch that reduces lever effort and prevents wheel hop during aggressive downshifts.
Features
The Scrambler 400X differs from the Speed 400 in terms of its chassis, suspension, wheels, tyres, and styling. While the main frame is the same as the Speed 400, the Scrambler 400X has a different subframe that raises the seat height to 835mm and increases the ground clearance to 195mm. The suspension travel is also increased to 150mm at both ends, with upside-down forks at the front and a mono-shock at the rear. The wheels are larger on the Scrambler 400X, with a 19-inch alloy wheel at the front and a 17-inch alloy wheel at the rear, with dual-purpose tyres that offer better grip on varied terrain. The brakes are also different, with a larger 320mm disc brake at the front and a 230mm disc brake at the rear, both equipped with dual-channel ABS that can be switched off at the rear for off-road riding.
The Scrambler 400X also features some distinctive design elements that set it apart from the Speed 400, such as a round headlight with a grille, a bolt-on handlebar brace, steel footpegs with removable rubber inserts, a sump guard, a steel radiator guard, a two-piece seat, hand guards and a twin-exit exhaust end can. The instrument cluster is a round LCD unit that displays speed, rpm, fuel level, gear position, odometer, trip meter, and clock. The bike also comes with an LED tail light and turn signals.
Price and Rivals
The Scrambler 400X has been launched at an ex-showroom price of Rs 2,62,996. The delivery of the bike will start soon from all its official dealerships. The bike is available in three color options: Phantom Black with a Silver Ice stripe on the tank, Matt Khaki Green with a Fusion White stripe, or Carnival Red with a Phantom Black stripe.
The Scrambler 400X competes with other entry-level adventure bikes in the Indian market, such as the Royal Enfield Himalayan (Rs 2.10 lakh – Rs 2.12 lakh), Yezdi Scrambler (Rs 2.10 lakh – Rs 2.12 lakh), BMW G310GS (Rs 2.90 lakh) and KTM 390 Adventure (Rs 2.81 lakh). All prices are ex-showroom.
