Kabul: The Taliban has said that 150 people have died in floods in the mountainous province of Nuristan in Afghanistan. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid did not give further details on Thursday regarding the deaths the day before.

Mohamed Syed Mohamed, the spokesman for the provincial governor, said a village named Terdesh was flooded, affecting at least 100 homes. Mohamed said he had received information about 60 deaths, but the death toll could be much higher. Nuristan is a mountainous region and a large part of the province is controlled by the Taliban.

Mohammad said thousands of families had to take shelter in the neighboring Kunar region because of the floods. He said the Nuristan government has appealed to the Taliban to allow rescue teams into their territory.
